Popular People Get The Flu Faster!

Forget flu shots, according to a new study, if you don't want to come down with the irritating bug this season, you may want to lose a few of your friends. According to a new study, popular people tend to be the first to catch the flu. In the study, 319 random Harvard undergraduates were asked to name their friends, which yielded 425 students who were named at least once. About one third of the original group got the flu in the fall and winter of 2009, while students named as "friends" were diagnosed 14 days earlier. And the epidemic peaked in the "friends" group 46 days before it spread to the general student population. One of the study's authors, Nicholas Christakis, M.D., a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School, in Boston, believes that things like social networks could be a good tool to monitor flu epidemics on a city, state, or national level. But others feel that these methods wouldn't be any better, or more cost effective, than current techniques used to track the spread of the flu. So unless you're a hermit, there's no fool-proof way to escape the flu!

Ever been naked and in a jam? Yeah, us neither. But scientists in London have invented spray-on clothing in a can for just such occasions! The liquid spray hardens on the body and turns into a reusable garment.

TV TIDBITS!

• Mad Men's Jon Hamm will host the October 30th episode of Saturday Night Live. This is Hamm's second stint as host. Like the upcoming gig, his first time, in 2008, was the show's Halloween-themed episode.

• Guess the public really wasn't dying to see The Apprentice go back to its original format. Thursday's two-hour series premiere logged its lowest-rated telecast ever among adults 18-49 and averaged only 4.7 million viewers. That's a 53% drop from last spring's Celebrity Edition and a 63% drop from its last non-celebrity premiere on January 1st, 2007.

• TNT has ordered a second season of the Jason Lee series Memphis Beat. The network has given the go-ahead for 10 episodes of the show, which will return in 2011.

• Twilight's Elizabeth Reaser has landed a recurring role on CBS's The Good Wife. She'll make her first appearance on the October 19th episode, playing a journalist and potential love interest for Josh Charles' character Will.
