Massages boost immune system, a mass of rays, new gal for Spidey, Daily Page

While most people get massages to help them relax or get the kinks out, it turns out they could actually be good for your health as well. According to research done at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, massages actually do more than just relax your muscles—they can help boost your immune system. 53 healthy adults were recruited for the research, with 29 of them getting a 45 minute deep tissue Swedish massage (um, where can we sign up?) and the other 24 getting a lighter one. Blood samples were taken immediately before and up to one hour after the massage, and researchers were surprised to find biological changes in the subjects. Volunteers who got the Swedish massage experienced decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases in lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system. Those who got the light massage had greater increases in oxytocin (a hormone associated with contentment) than the Swedish massage group, and bigger decreases in hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Now this gives new meaning to a massage with a happy ending.

• Although initial reports claimed the upcoming Spider-Man reboot would have a new love interest for the title character, reports that Mary Jane Watson will indeed return for the film, although she won't be played by Kirsten Dunst. Sources say that Easy A star Emma Watson is the studio's first choice for the part, although The Blind Side's Lily Collins, Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska and The Sorcerer's Apprentice's Teresa Palmer are also said to be in the running. Word is, the film will have two female leads. In addition to the Mary Jane character, Gwen Stacy will be written into the film.

• Kate Beckinsale is getting back into her skintight leather suit. The actress has agreed to reprise her role of vampire heroine Selene in a fourth installment in the Underworld series. Beckinsale appeared in the first two Underworld flicks, but sat out of 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. So far there's no word on when production on the new film will begin.

• Kick-Ass' Chloe Moretz, who stars in the new vampire flick Let Me In, opening Friday, will play the title character in a movie based on the counterculture icon Emily the Strange. The film is expected to explore the origin of the character, which was created by skateboarder Rob Reger in the early 90s for stickers, T-shirts and skateboards.
