MISCELLANEOUS MOVIE NEWS!

● Robert Downey, Jr. has dropped out Disney's Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, the Great and Powerful.  The film, to be directed by Sam Raimi, tells the story of a young illusionist who is swept up by a tornado and lands in Oz, which is run by two magical witches. No reason was given for Downey, Jr.'s departure, but word is, Johnny Depp is already in talks to replace him.

● Will Smith is getting ready to ruin another classic movie. First he produced a remake of The Karate Kid, starring his son Jaden, and now Variety reports Will is in talks to bring Annie back to the big screen as a starring vehicle for his daughter Willow. There's no word on whether the new film will be updated from its original 1930s setting, but there are reports that Jay-Z, who produced Willow's hit "Whip My Hair," may collaborate on the music.

Paramount Pictures has announced that Sacha Baron Cohen's new comedy The Dictator will open May 11th, 2012. The film stars Cohen as both a dictator and a goat herder. According to the studio's description, "The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed."

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver are planning to re-launch the Lethal Weapon franchise. The studio has hired former LAPD officer Will Beall to write a new script for the buddy cop movie, which will have a new cast.  There's no word on who'll take over the roles of LAPD officers Riggs and Murtaugh, made famous by Mel Gibsonand Danny Glover.

● Julianne Moore has been named Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year. She'll be roasted by the school's Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the nation's oldest undergraduate drama troupe, on January 27th.

TV TIDBITS!

ABC's upcoming reboot of Charlie's Angels has found their first Angel. Annie Ilonzeh, best known for playing Maya Ward on General Hospital, has been cast in the series, which will feature Robert Wagner as the voice of Charlie.

The season premiere of American Idol suffered a little without Simon Cowell. Wednesday night's two-hour kick-off drew 26.1 million viewers, which is down 13 percent from last year. Preliminary numbers show that viewership was down 28% with adults 18-49, making it the lowest rated premiere for Idol since 2002 (which aired in the summer), and the biggest drop ever for the show between seasons.  Idol still beat its competitors though. It crushed Paula Abdul's Live to Dance, which only attracted 5.3 million viewers, although ABC's Modern Familydid just fine, with 11.1 viewers tuning in.

TMZ reports that Snooki and Jwoww are shooting a Jersey Shore spin-off this weekend.  Sources tell the site that the pilot is being shot in Long Island. The premise is basically the two outrageous gals being themselves.
