We're playing the name game: K-Hits $10,000 name game, Tracy had this article on the show this morning: TRENDY BABY NAMES And I recently discovered I was decieved in 4th grade about Idaho and what the name means.
According to website Nameberry, these are some of names enjoying the biggest jumps in attention and, therefore, are the trendiest new baby names:
- Rue
- Emmett
- Beckett
- Adele
- Ivy
The popular names are influenced by movies: i.e. Hunger Games, and musical stars - Adele and Beyonce's baby - Blue Ivy.
So that got us chatting about the name of the state.
In an attempt to win a bet with my brother about lentil growth in Idaho I stumbled upon the story of Idaho's name.
Do you know what Idaho means in the native language? If anyone bets you that it's something about the land of the brave or the sun rising on the holy land or anything like that bet them. It means nothing. Idaho was a contrived name by one George Willing, a mining lobbyist who told Congress that it meant Gem of the Mountains in Indian language. Yea right if that Indian was dating a woman named Ida. Willing dreamed up the name and urged Congress to adopt it for the new territory in the Pikes Peak region, which we know today as Colorado.
So this isn't the age of information, this was the Victorian age. Word doesn't get around as fast as today.
Tracy, Carl and I were just sitting around the studio imagining George with his main squeeze Ida promising her how he's going to name a state after her. Indian words were big at the time and they ended in ho: Navajo, Arapahoe. So time goes on and Congress realizes that George was pulling their leg and they say "No Way George". But wait.....later another territory wants to become a state (Idaho) and Congress figures "What the Hell are we going to call it?" "Hey", someone in the saloon says, "what about that bogus name George came up with?" So we get some contrived name and are robbed of land when the surveyors get screwed up and make the Idaho/ Montana border hundreds of miles west of the mark. Alcohol may have been involved in both those stories.
