College interest rates, Slow Jammin, and the U of I.

  • Print

I remember when I went to college, I had had a job since I was in the 8th grade at the Salmon River Inn.  I started out bussing tables, then I got the waitress job.  I worked 3 nights a week until 9.  I would get out of school at 3 and go to my job.  I was 16.  I did that for two years.  I also worked part time at the local radio station.

I don't even remember what the pay scale was.  I remember most all of my paychecks went into a savings account.  I had saved $2,000 by the time I graduated.  That got me into the U of I.   Years later when I have a daughter and she wants to go to the University of Virginia, I tell her "go for it.  We'll figure out how to pay for it."  Her dad and I took out a $20,000 loan for a one of her years there.  She took out some and was awarded many scholarships.  She too had a job in high school and managed to save to help pay her way.   Her cost: 10 times that of my college.  That was 11 years ago.  I can't imagine what it would take now.  We just paid off the 20K loan and that was because her Dad got a windfall on an investment.

I don't know the answer, but it's on my mind with the news that the rate for government-subsidized Stafford loans will jump July 1.    Apparently it's on many people's mind as the President himself was

"Slow Jammin the news" with Jimmy Fallon on the issue.
