I dropped by the post office last Thursday to pick up a few stamps. I'm in line for 20 minutes, which for some would be a long time. It was worth it as I was entertained by a man who's seen more than 7 decades of life. He was sharing with the gentleman behind him about the times when cigarettes were 19 cents a pack and gas was 19 cents a gallon. The story about his teen years was what perked up my ears.
"I told my dad that I couldn't make it on the dollar a week for gas that he gave me" the older gentleman explained to his audience.
"He said we can fix that. I thought he meant I would get more money. No. He took the brakes out of my truck" the storyteller laughed.
"It's amazing how much gas you save when you don't use the brakes"
I loved that because I've been trying to hypermile. I now know the time it takes for the lights to change on my routes. I coast to the red light so I'm still moving by the time it turns green.
