SINGER-SONGWRITER JOE SOUTH DEAD AT 72 Singer-songwriter Joe South, who wrote country superstar Lynn Anderson’s pop crossover smash “Rose Garden,” died following a heart attack Wednesday in Atlanta at the age of 72. South also scored with his own 1969 solo hit “Games People Play,” which won a Song of the Year Grammy. South also penned the Billy Joe Royal hit “Down in the Boondocks” and “Hush,” a song later covered by Deep Purple which became their first top 10 hit.

MANILOW SET TO RELEASE THIRD CHRISTMAS ALBUM ON OCTOBER 2

Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award-winning Barry Manilow is getting an obscenely huge jump on the annual deluge of holiday album releases by issuing his third such collection Barry Manilow: The Classic Christmas Album on October 2. Despite leaves still clinging to trees, Manilow is convinced his rabid fans will already be in the holiday spirit almost a full month before Halloween.
